While most everyone knows that October is pink as we observe breast cancer awareness month, September happens to be the most colorful month of the year as we honor seven types of cancer:

Childhood Cancer is gold

The international awareness symbol for Childhood Cancer is the gold ribbon. Unlike other cancer awareness ribbons, which focus on a singular type of cancer, the gold ribbon is a symbol for all forms of cancer affecting children and adolescents.

About 11,050 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2020. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades. Because of major treatment advances in recent decades, 84% of children with cancer now survive 5 years or more.

Uterine Cancer

A Peach Ribbon brings awareness to Uterine Cancer. Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month is recognized each year in September and is a perfect time to encourage women to learn more about cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, ovaries, and uterus including early detection and prevention. Every year in the United States, about 89,000 women are diagnosed with and more than 29,000 die from a gynecologic cancer.

Leukemia

Leukemia is also represented by the color orange. It accounts for 35 percent of all blood cancer diagnoses in the United States. Leukemia awareness and campaigns are organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Lymphoma

Since 1999, the lime green ribbon has been the established and well-known color to raise the importance of awareness for all Lymphoma causes. However, there are two types of Lymphoma: Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma with many subtypes.

This year, an estimated 8,480 people (4,690 men and 3,790 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. From 2007 to 2016, the number of people diagnosed with this disease dropped 1.5% each year. It is estimated that 970 deaths (570 men and 400 women) from this disease will occur this year.

Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian Cancer Awareness is represented by the color teal.In the United States, Ovarian Cancer is the 10th most common cancer among women and the 5th leading cause of cancer death in women. Each year, over 22,000 women receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Awareness is represented by the color light blue. After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. It's estimated that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. While prostate cancer can be serious depending on its stage, there are over 2 million men that are prostate cancer survivors.

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer Awareness is represented by the color purple. Thyroid cancer is cancer that develops in the thyroid, the butterfly shaped organ located in the neck just below the Adam's apple. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Two-thirds of thyroid cancer
