Cited as one of the year’s success stories, the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation’s Sun Smart initiative has gained the attention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Sun Smart initiative, which was developed in partnership with the City of El Paso, focuses on providing sunscreen to patrons at local spray parks, swimming pools and outdoor events through a uniquely designed sunscreen dispenser.
In the 2019 Report by the CDC, the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation and the City of El Paso explained why skin cancer prevention is a top priority in the ‘Sun City.’ Patty Tiscareño, Executive Director for the Foundation stated in the report, “It simply makes sense that the Sun City be the first in the state of Texas to provide protection from powerful UV rays that can ultimately lead to a skin cancer diagnosis.”
The CDC report looks at the various aspects of skin cancer including the rise in the number of those diagnosed with the disease as well as occupational and environmental risk factors.
