Grief and the most ‘Wonderful’ time of the year

Ready or not, here come the holidays. Under normal circumstances, preparing for the holidays can be stressful. We incorporate shopping, wrapping, cooking, decorating and entertaining into already chock-full days.Hopefully, the joy of the season prevails over the angst and we survive, usually with resolve to be better prepared next year.

Grief and the Holidays

For people who are grieving, it can be a painful time of year.“I wish I could just go to sleep on the day before Thanksgiving and wake up on January 2nd!” This is a sentiment that bereavement counselors all across the country hear a lot during the fall and early winter months.

One of the hardest things for most grieving families and friends to face, especially during the first year following the loss, is deciding how to cope with the holidays. The traditions and rituals formerly shared with loved ones suddenly become too painful to bear. Yet ignoring the holidays altogether does not really work, either.
