In a recent report, NPR discovered that vaccination rates against human papillomavirus have remained far lower than rates for other routine childhood and teen immunizations. The reason: primary care doctors treat the HPV vaccine differently from other routinely recommended immunizations, hesitating to recommend it fully and on time.
This strongly suggests that parents, not doctors, should take the responsibility to insure their children be given the HPV vaccination.
An HPV vaccination is recommended for both girls AND boys at age 11 or 12 years. HPV vaccination helps protect girls from getting cervical cancer and anal cancer. HPV vaccination helps protect boys from getting anal cancer. One of the HPV vaccines also protects both girls and boys from getting genital warts—this is the only HPV vaccine that can be given to boys.
